How did I not know until today? A whole year's worth of images by Maira Kalman (of Newyorkistan fame) here. I'm not quite sure why it took Micheal Enwright to convince me to check out more of her work but I am very glad that I did. Also! An Illustrated edition Shrunk and White's Elements of Style? Brilliant.
Illustrations are from Kalman's The Principles of Uncertainty.
On the Vinyl Cafe Stuart McLean is talking about Pluto and pluots and my massive love for the CBC Sunday-day line up is not disappointed!
I have a list of things to do a mile long but I think I'll go play some guitar hero first.
Well, it has been ages.
Things have happened. Cupcakes have been baked. Computers have broken. Taxes have been audited and theses have not progressed.
My talk radio obsession has reached new heights. I discovered This American Life. I have listened to it so much that my dreams now mimic the episode structure.
I do have a few things to show for my absence. Here they are in a list-like format.
1. Blythe Craftster Swap 4
This is the second Blythe Swap I've been involved in on Craftster. I swapped with nxtdrgrl and knit_north. Here's what I made:
And some of what I received.
2. I went to New York
Here's Mitsou in a park and dinner in Gramercy.
3. I Got a New Camera!
An SLR - not digital. It certainly is different not to be able to delete the 20 (or so) shots that don't work at all.
4. I met some new kittens
The new stray cat in our backyard had some kittens in our garage. We only saw them for a few days - after which they disappeared. The momma cat wouldn't let me near them when they were in our backyard so I was working up to gaining her confidence so I could capture the whole family and take them to a cat rescue. Presumably another neighbour did the same - though the mum is still around. To offset my missing kitten saddness I've begun volunteering at the humane society bottle feeding wee baby orphaned kitties of which there are something like 300 of at present. The bottle feeding is not easy - it's panicy, especially because at the age they are, a couple missed feedings might mean they won't make it. Also, baby kittens, so it appears, do not enjoy being bottle fed. It's sometimes a bit of a fight. I almost prefer spending extra time, after everyone has been fed, in the URI recovery nursery with the older kittens who are eating on their own and desperate for a little cuddle. Here's a pic of my favourite of the backyard kittens.
5. I customized a Blythe!
I just couldn't take a decent picture of my Tailor Gibson (see above) and after doing a few minor fixes still wasn't smitten with her so I took the plunge and sanded her face and gave her all new make-up, boggled eyes, and a hair cut. I think I'll keep her now!
How could I not have known there were daleks in the sphere...
Lots of pictures to update with this weekend.
First, meet Valancy, my new Tailor Gibson.
Her bangs need some fixing, and a bit more of a shape, maybe a matting and some replacement freckles? I'm not madly in love with her yet, but there is something compelling about her that makes me want to keep her nearly stock.
Next, my first momoko photos ever. Crystal, who has now made this a tradition, gave her to me a few weeks ago and this is her first photo shoot. The pose-ability is really cool!
And last but not least, Miles Teacup having a short (very) respite from tearing the house apart. Seriously, for a three-legged cat one would think he wouldn't be quite so fast - or strong. Good thing he's sweet as pie.
My cat has been immortalized in song. By this guy. Go and listen. It's seriously the best thing ever.
